about
At the turn of the millennium I was fortunate enough to be on a cruise of the Baltic Sea, visiting Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Russia. This song was inspired by what I saw and felt during my time there. I feel that this might be the most beautiful song I’ve ever written. I hope you enjoy it and accept it in the spirit in which it was written. More than that I can’t really say. I’ll let the song speak now.
lyrics
ALWAYS THE SPARROW
On the roofs of factory ghosts spread the homes of clean, virgin wood.
Crumbling walls near wretched canals where the pride of grim empire stood.
God’s wonders, God’s light – human sight crude and narrow.
God’s mercy and might – and always the sparrow.
Cobbled streets and symbols of peace, blue tin soldiers prance and salute.
Haggard beards near hamburger stands speak with lions regal and mute.
Ancient gates wail volumes of pain, scarred by arrows, blackened with flame.
Mobile phones and Russian champagne – still the poor with us,
Now who’s to blame?
